Ōamaru’s coast was so exposed that from the early 1860s it was one of the country’s most notorious shipwreck sites. But still the ships kept coming, so in time the Ōamaru Harbour Board, formed in 1874, constructed a safe harbour that is now New Zealand’s most authentic Victorian deep-sea port. On it rested the prosperity that gave Ōamaru its magnificent limestone buildings. this heavy-weight IPA has intense tropical fruit and citrus aromas of pineapple and passionfruit as well as stone fruit and citrus. This beer is packed with malt, hops and flavour.

TASTING NOTES:

Early days the Ōamaru Harbour was – no safe port – originally, ships anchored in the open sea, offloading cargo into surf boats, then carefully guided  to shore, through the breakers & hair raising foam surges.  

150 years on our mellow East Coast pale ale is your ‘calm from the storm’  chill unfiltered flavory goodness – with full fruity hop flavour of tropical fruit and citrus, & finally a gentle bitterness.

This Indian Pale Ale recipe uses a world of ingredients; top fermented with a west coast USA yeast strain, mashed into American Ale Malt, hopped and dry hopped with a barrage of NZ hops. Back in the glory days of this town Ōamaru, when beer was swilled and trouble abounded, the unyielding Harbourmaster brought order to the harbour – the centre of the chaos. Like the compelling waters of the Waitaki rivers’ Black Point, our Extra Stout is a dark and intensely roasty ale, with strong aromas of black coffee & bitter chocolate.
